We specialize in northern Michigan logging using proven forest management (timber management) practices. When we do a timber harvest, our goal is to perform a select cut in such a way that a sustainable harvest of high-quality saw logs on a 10 year rotation will be possible forever. Rather than simply removing your most valuable trees, our approach is to use sound forest management principles when we do a timber harvest. Our goal is to make your growing timber more valuable in ten years than it is now.
Removing the diseased and deformed trees will make your forest healthier. The remaining trees will grow more vigorously. Individual trees to be harvested are chosen by the following sustainable forestry principles:
-
Risk; remove damaged and diseased trees that will not live and grow until the next harvest.
-
Form; remove defective trees (crooked, leaning, low forks, large limb diameter, and short clear lengths) that will not increase in value during the next growing cycle.
-
Tree spacing; optimize crown position by removing trees which interfere with the growth of high-quality trees.
-
Financial maturity; harvest the peak value trees whose value has topped out.
-
Density; use forest thinning to optimize the proper basal area. This maximizes timber growth and creates maximum value.
-
Tree size balance; adjust the size class distribution to have trees of all size classes:
- saw logs (12” DBH and up)
- pole trees (6-11” DBH)
- saplings (1-5” DBH)
