A timber stand improvement (TSI) is designed to maximize the financial production of your forest by performing the tree harvest in such a way that a sustainable harvest of high-quality saw logs on a ten-year rotation will be possible forever. Rather than simply removing your most valuable trees, our approach is to use sound forest management principles when we do a timber harvest. Our goal is to make your growing timber more valuable in ten years than it is now by removing the diseased and deformed trees to allow room for the remaining trees to grow more vigorously.

Individual trees to be harvested are chosen by the following principles:

  1. Risk; remove damaged and diseased trees that will not live and grow until the next harvest.
  2. Form; remove defective trees (crooked, leaning, low forks, large limb diameter, and short clear lengths) that will not increase in value during the next growing cycle.
  3. Tree spacing; optimize crown position by removing trees which interfere with the growth of high-quality trees.
  4. Specie distribution; lower the percentage of low value trees (Beech, Ash, Basswood, Aspen)
  5. Financial maturity; harvest the Peak Value Trees whose value has topped out.
  6. Density; use forest thinning to optimize the proper basal area. This maximizes timber growth and creates maximum value.
  7. Tree size balance; adjust the size class distribution to have trees of all size classes: saw logs (12” DBH and up); pole trees (6-11” DBH); saplings (1-5” DBH)

To determine if your property qualifies for the timber stand improvement (TSI) program, call us at 888-848-4623 or Contact Us.
